Set against the backdrop of the South African xenophobic attacks of May 2008, the play explores the ‘fragility of goodness’ and engages with both victim and perpetrator. Having spent several months in the townships, The Line is constructed from a series of interviews with South Africans involved or affected by the xenophobic attacks. The textual construct of the play is Verbatim Theatre. The Line explores the process of perpetration from neighbour to violent foe and attempts to re-humanize both perpetrator and victim whilst investigating what makes good people do bad things and how one crosses ’the line’ so to speak.
